Is Pet Insurance Worth It?
There’s nothing scarier than when your dog has a medical issue.
Of course…you’re worried about your dogs’ wellbeing, but you’re also worried about how much the veterinary bill is going to be, and if you can afford it.
Before I became a certified dog trainer, I would preach about how everyone needs pet insurance.
It wasn’t until becoming a dog trainer than I realized EXACTLY why it was so important.
Your dog WILL have a major medical even and pet insurance will likely cover it.
As a dog trainer, I see a lot of cases where a dog has eaten something it’s not supposed to.
I see cases like this DAILY.
They eat their human’s favorite pair of shoes. (Or just one, to make it even more fun!)
The rope off of the cat tree.
The toy you just spent $15 on half an hour before.
The most common emergency surgery for dogs is the removal of gastrointestinal foreign bodies.
As a dog trainer, I get to see pet insurance from a different perspective…
Some pet insurance companies will cover behavioral treatment.
If you have a dog with extreme fear, anxiety, or aggression, you want to get them evaluated by a Veterinary Behaviorist so they can prescribe the proper medication.
This treatment can be pricey and can prohibit dog owners from getting their dog the behavioral help they need.
They will end up going to their local veterinarian and get prescribed a medication that could potentially make the dogs’ behavior worse. (I know, I know. You love your vet. I get it. But they don’t specialize in behavior like a Veterinary Behaviorist does!)
But here’s my BIGGEST reason why I think pet insurance is worth it…
I NEVER want you to be in a situation where you cannot medical care for your dog.
This is sadly something we see far too often in the animal welfare community.
An owner cannot afford veterinary care so they choose to to re-home their dog.
Or worse…they chose to euthanize their dog in order to end its suffering.
I can hear some of you die-hard dog moms gasping from here in horror…
This happens FREQUENTLY…this is not something I’m exaggerating to get your attention.
I can’t IMAGINE what it feels like to be in their shoes having to make that decision.
And I never want YOU to be in that situation.
The average cost of pet insurance is $50 per month.
The cost of pet insurance depends on many factors such as age and breed.
We personally pay anywhere from $41 to $70/month per dog.
Because of pet insurance, I never have to think twice about taking my dog to the vet.
Because I know that the majority of the expense will be covered by pet insurance.
Did I also mention that most pet insurance companies cover things like vaccines, exams, heart worm tests, heart work preventative, x-rays, and bloodwork?
Yeah….it’s a sweet deal!
